Michelle holds a joint appointment with the Kirwan Institute and the Moritz College of Law where she is an Associate Professor of Law. Her current research interests include racial bias in the criminal justice system and successful models of civil rights advocacy. Prior to joining the Institute, Michelle obtained significant experience litigating civil rights cases in private practice, as well as at the ACLU of Northern California, where she served as director of the Racial Justice Project and coordinated the project’s litigation, media, lobbying, and grassroots organizing work. In 1998, the project launched a major campaign against racial profiling in California that eventually gave rise to a national campaign against biased police practices. Michelle Alexander served as a law clerk on the United States Supreme Court for Justice Harry Blackmun, and on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit for Chief Judge Abner Mikva. She graduated from Stanford Law School and Vanderbilt University.
