The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University partners with people, communities, and institutions worldwide to think about, talk about, and act on race in ways that create and expand opportunity for all.

Applicants must have a Doctoral degree, solid understanding of and support for the Institute’s mission, have very strong research and writing skills, and have a record of high-quality performance. Appointment is for one year, renewable for a second year. Position(s) may be full-time with an annual equivalent salary based on education and experience plus applicable fringe benefits.

Apply with a 2-3 page application letter including a brief description of background, training, and recent scholarship; a preferred start date; and desired tenure of the fellowship (12 or 24 months). Also include curriculum vitae with references to special awards and honors; an official grade transcript; and 1-2 scholarly writing samples; and three letters of recommendation.

(2) 2009 Kirwan Institute Summer Law Internship Program

The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity is seeking legal research assistants for its summer internship program. Applicants should have strong legal research and legal writing skills and a demonstrated interest in issues of race and ethnicity. Summer Intern positions range from 10 to 30 hours per week. Hourly wage is based on education/experience. No benefits are provided.

Principal Duties:
Summer interns may work on research on a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to: civil rights and human rights, racial and economic segregation, criminal justice, eminent domain, housing law, questions pertaining to the 14th Amendment, immigration and citizenship. Summer interns may assist in legal analysis, legal research, preparation of presentations, conferences and other engagements, writing projects including book chapters, journal articles, and bibliographic reviews.

Minimum Qualifications:
At least one semester of law school; experience and competence with the Bluebook system of legal citation, experience and competence with Microsoft Word; excellent verbal and written communication skills; good organizational skills and the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; a demonstrated interest in issues of race and ethnicity.

The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity is seeking graduate and undergraduate research assistants for its summer internship program. Applicants should have strong research and writing skills and a demonstrated interest in issues of race and ethnicity. Summer Intern positions range from 10 to 30 hours per week. Hourly wage is based on education/experience. No benefits are provided.

Principal Duties:
Summer interns may work on research on a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to: marginalized racial and ethnic groups, racial and economic segregation, racial justice and regional equity, democratic participation and governance. Summer interns may assist in legal and policy analysis, preparation of presentations, literature reviews, bibliographic annotation, planning and coordinating meetings, conferences and other engagements, writing projects including book chapters, discussion papers and journal articles, and conducting extensive statistical & data analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree completed (or in progress) or equivalent combination of education/experience; experience with Microsoft Office suite software, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint; experience with statistical and data analysis; excellent verbal and written communication skills; good organizational skills and the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; a demonstrated interest in issues of race and ethnicity.
